SAN FRANCISCO, CA--( Aug 13, 2014) - Typesafe, provider of the world's leading Reactive Platform, today announced that it has been included as a sample vendor in three of Gartner's 2014 Hype Cycle reports, including "Hype Cycle for Application Development, 2014 [1]," "Hype Cycle for Application Architecture, 2014 [2]," and "Hype Cycle for In-Memory Computing, 2014 [3]." Akka -- part of the Typesafe Reactive Framework -- was also mentioned in a fourth Gartner report, "Hype Cycle for Web Computing, 2014 [4]."
The Gartner Hype Cycle is one of the most popular collections of Gartner research. Each report characterizes the typical progression of buyer expectations toward innovations over time, helping technology buyers understand maturity and future potential.
Gartner identified Typesafe as a sample vendor for "Reactive Programming" in the Hype Cycle for Application Development, 2014 and Hype Cycle for Application Architecture Reports, 2014 -- a category that Gartner projected to reach to 5% to 20% market penetration in the 2014 reports (up from the 1% to 5% market penetration forecasted for Reactive Programming in the same reports in 2013).
According to both the Hype Cycle for Application Development and the Hype Cycle for Application Architecture 2014 reports, "Reactive programming design patterns and techniques support massively scalable applications by focusing on asynchronous communication paths -- aspects critical to next-generation cloud solutions. We expect interest and subsequent hype around reactive programming to grow through 2016 as next-generation mobile and big data solutions demand new approaches to match massive scaling requirements."
The Typesafe Reactive Platform -- including the Scala programming language, Play application framework, and Akka actor system for managing concurrency and distribution on the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) -- are designed explicitly for developers writing and running distributed applications at massive scale. Gartner also identified Typesafe as a sample vendor in "Web-Scale Transaction Processing" (TP) in the Hype Cycle for In-Memory Computing, 2014 report -- a trend with a benefit rating of "transformational" and a "market penetration" of 1% to 5% of target audience.
According to the Hype Cycle for In-Memory Computing 2014, "Increasingly, digital-business-enabling applications (for example, mobile-enabled enterprise applications, Internet of Things-based systems and API publishing) are generating extraordinary pressure on conventional TP architectures for greater scalability. Therefore, more and more organizations are looking for ways to incrementally evolve their core business systems toward Web-scale TP architectures."
