Typesafe Appoints Rod Johnson to Board of Directors as Company Growth Accelerates

Creator of Spring Framework to provide enterprise Java expertise to take company to the next level while expert-led Scala course revenue increases 550% from last year

JAVAONE (Booth #5002), San Francisco, CA (October. 1, 2012) — Typesafe today announced that Rod Johnson, co-founder of SpringSource, has joined the company’s board of directors. Additionally, Typesafe announced a fivefold increase in training revenue, underscoring the increasing adoption of Scala currently underway. As an example of massive interest in Scala, Typesafe co-founder Martin Odersky’s free, 7-week course titled, “Functional Programming Principles in Scala” has attracted more than 45,000 registrants on Coursera. The company will be presenting 4 of the 18 Scala-related conference sessions during JavaOne.

“Today’s computing environments are moving towards multicore hardware and cloud computing workloads,” said Johnson. “Typesafe is strategically positioned to provide innovative solutions with its modern, Scala and Akka-based software stack and developer tools for the next wave of applications. Combine this powerful technology with interoperable investments in Java and the value proposition is hard to ignore. I look forward to working with this forward-looking company and its brilliant team led by newly appointed CEO, Mark Brewer.”

“Typesafe has seen incredible traction within development teams clamoring for new solutions to augment their technology in a new computing era driven by ever-increasing demands for speed and efficiency,” said Mark Brewer, Typesafe’s Chief Executive Officer. “Being able to attract visionary technologist and respected business leader Rod Johnson onto Typesafe’s board is a testament to the incredible value Typesafe offers for enterprises looking for cutting-edge technology. We look forward to leveraging Rod’s business acumen and technology expertise.”

Widely known as the founder of Spring, Johnson brings more than 15 years of experience in the Java infrastructure software space. Most recently, Rod served as the Senior Vice President of Application Platform Strategy and General Manager of VMware's SpringSource division after VMware acquired SpringSource in 2009.

The addition of Johnson to Typesafe’s board further builds upon the already impressive roster of industry leaders working with Typesafe including CEO Mark Brewer; Co-founder, Chairman and Chief Architect Martin Odersky; Series A investor Bill Kaiser of Greylock Partners; software executive François Stieger; and Jason Pressman from Shasta Ventures. Pressman led Typesafe’s most recent $14M Series B funding round.

Typesafe has garnered impressive customer momentum since the company’s launch in May 2011. Flagship customer case studies include:
